Being the first of the Sr. Joan mysteries, the author was successful in developing the personality of Sr. Joan and other characters. The story was interesting since it was based on life as a female religious living in a semi-cloistered community. Sr. Joan endears herself to the readers as she is open with her personal struggles and short-comings. She regularly reflects on a former romantic relationship with a Jewish man prior to her entering the religious life. The mystery has twists and turns and is compelling. The novel was entertaining and I look forward to reading more in the series.

good mystery series with no swearing. good reading.
A Vow of Silence is the first in Veronica Black's "Sister Joan" series of who-dun-its, introducing us to Sister Joan of the semi-cloistered order of the Daughters of Compassion, who works hard at striking a balance between her calling to the vowed religious life and her inate ability to figure out mysteries at her new convent in Cornwall. Vow of Silence
Even when there are differences and problems, the women try to work things out and get through difficulties as best they can. Sister Joan can be almost too strong minded, but she also can see where she needs to work on herself and that she might be able to learn from the others around her.
Loved it! Can't wait to read the next one. Light, engaging reading.
Sister Joan is sent from her order's motherhouse in London to a remote Cornwall convent as a replacement for a nun who has died. The nature of the death, and mysterious happenings at the remote convent compel Sister Joan to investigate. The story plunges the reader into the details of convent routine and how they can become distorted into evil.
This gets a five not because it is great literature, it isn't, but because it fulfills what I want from a relatively short mystery novel. A little tension, a little who could have done it, a little new knowledge, and a clear wrap-up at the end. These books do this. Great for putting in the purse and taking with me when I might need a pleasant distraction.
This is a gentle and interesting mystery, but mostly it's a story about the conditions and interactions of the residents of a nunnery. The book is a relatively quick, and enjoyable, read. The writing is easy going, the story retains your interest, and the cast of characters is relatively small and thus easy to keep up with. The "unpleasantness" is kept to a minimum in keeping with the story and there is no gratuitous gore or violence. A pleasant and entertaining cozy mystery, providing an informative introduction to nunnery life.
