ST PETER'S KEYS The Pope enemies are within Nicolina Fabiani Series #4 NICOLINA FABIANI CONSPIRACIES Book 5 edition by Yvonne Crowe Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Being a fan of Yvonne Crowe’s international thrillers, and her Lina and David series in particular, I was eager to read this latest instalment. Crowe likes to delve into the world of secret societies and hidden power elites and this time around she turns her considerable erudition and fertile imagination to the world’s smallest sovereign state, Vatican City.

The novel begins with the murder of an Augustine priest, the rector of Vatican Parish and the Pope’s right hand man, who’s found dead with blood pooling around his head. The who-done-it motif expands with the horrific crucifixion of a small child on Palatine Hill and a Vatican priest Edoardos helping to steer the two protagonists in the direction of the guilty party/parties. But the palate the author paints on is much larger than simple murder and involves, as usual, power struggles and Machiavellian intrigues at the highest level.

Crowe’s books are always meticulously researched, giving the work depth and authority. They are also hugely informative and the reader learns an incredible amount as they turn the pages (metaphorically in my case, as I have an e -reader). We’re introduced to Pope Callixtus IV almost immediately, who comments on his Episcopal ring being missing. The narrative voice interjects, “The Fisherman’s Ring …traditionally worn on the right hand of the Pope and depicts a bearded St. Peter holding a pair of keys. One key represents the power in heaven while the other key shows the spiritual authority invested in the individual.” Not to everyone’s taste I know, but I welcome these moments where the author takes time to edify us.

A fast paced, exciting and compelling read from the first page until the last.
This is the second book of Crowe's that I've read. This one centered on the activities of a cult-like group within the Vatican that wants to remove the current Pope for his openness, humility and the many reforms he is instituting, which the group feels threatened by. This group believes the Pope is undermining the authority of the Catholic church. And the group's leader is not above condoning murder.
Lina is an investigative reporter who is investigating the murder of the keeper of the sacristy, where sacred rings, chalices, clothing, etc used by the Popes as symbols of their Papal authority are kept locked up. But Lina believes the murder and theft of certain holy items runs deeper. Along with her boyfriend, a former Mossad agent and an old friend who is the Pope's assistant, she zeros in on her suspects, risking her life in the process.
I was very impressed with Crowe's knowledge of how the Vatican and those who serve the Pope and those who protect him operate. I read the book in two days because I had to find out what was going to happen.
Lina and her boyfriend, David, never disappoint.
I have been a fan of Yvonne Crowe's series about an Italian investigative journalist, Nicolina Fabiani from her first novel The Magdalene Conspiracy.

Since the second novel in the series Nicolina has been joined by David Baron, a professor of Ancient Languages and Archaeology in Beirut, who by now is her lover and pressing this contrarian journalist to marry him. I enjoy the romance that threads through the stories and can't wait to see if David eventually convinces her that wedded bliss will not interfere with her career.

He comes close to it in the ending to this latest novel about murder in the Vatican, with rogue Cardinals, Augustinian Friars and the charming and caring Pope Callixtus IV whom we met in the first book.

As he sets about continuing the reforms thjat Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI implemented to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church the hard liners in the Roman Curia who liked things just the way they were scheme and plot against him.

When a small child is crucified in the Nymphaeum on Palatine Hill it appears it could be linked to the first crime.

Nicolina takes this all in her stride after her good friend the Vatican priest Edoardos sets her on the trail of the killer. With her unorthodox methods and freedom to go where the security forces of the Vatican, the Swiss guards and the Gendarmaria Vaticana cannot, she looks under stones until she the killer crawls out from under.

I have to give the author credit for her vivid imagination, the ending in the Castel Sant'Angelo has given me nightmares, but I can't wait for the next book in the series after reading the sample chapters at the end of St Peter's Keys.
page Turner. The story flowed well and was told in good order. The research was apparent. All in all a great read.
I did not considered the story line well developed. Very poor editing. At one point I stopped counting the spelling errors and typos. Bottom line just not very good.
A great read filled with intrigue, skulduggery and suspense. A great read and highly recommended. A book well written. Salutations.
