I was extremely disappointed with this book by the time I got to the end. It took a long time for me to finish mostly because it stalled and the "middle" was soooo long. I couldn't get a good handle on the characters at all. They seemed to have conflicting characteristic and not in the good conflicted kind of way. It would have worked if the author intended them to have multiple personalities or something of that nature.
Isaac : I imagine the author was trying to portray Isaac's struggle with who he wants to be, who he's forced to be and the deception he must embrace to pull it off but the 'mystery' is lost straight out of the gate. His infatuation with Maya is just to over the top and the constant face kissing but not actual kissing...well...there were times that I may or may not have vomited in my mouth a little.
Maya : Then there is Maya with her supreme intelligence and photographic memory but she's a total doormat (most of the time). She sporatically has courage however it fades as quickly as it appears. There is a not-so tragic back story that is supposed to explain away her insecurities but its hard to buy into. Her venture into the D/s world just came across weird. It may have been more convincing if there'd been a better backstory about Maya and Luke's relationship.
Luke : Well we don't really know anything about Luke except for Isaac's dislike of him even though Isaac continues to train Luke's subs. I love to hate a bad guy but it was hard to hate Luke without any introduction to him.

Ok, so why not 1 or 2 stars? The final quarter of the book was good. There was a real story starting to unfold, some mystery was developing but by that time I was feeling a little used. IMO ½ of the book could have been eliminated, merging the second book with the 'intro' components of this book. All in all I was so tired of reading about mushy gushy that I'm to apprehensive to purchase the second book for fear of more of the same. While the developing story got my interest it took to long for me to be invested enough to buy the next book :(

Denial New Adult Romance Isaac Maya Book 1 eBook Ember Chase Reviews

This is a series of three books. I read the first of this series at the beginning of a two day car trip. The first book was "okay." Of all three books, it was the best - which is by no means saying it is a good book. It did help time to go by fairly quickly in between rest stops (with four kids) and when it ended, totally mid-story, I figured what the heck, I'll buy the rest of the series for the trip so I can see what all transpires. Hey, passing time was enough of a draw at that point. Each of the first two books end without resolving anything and at points that do not make sense unless you fully commit yourself to buying all three of the books in the series. Endless sex scenes - which often refer to the female protagonist as "squirting" on command - became quickly "beside the point." The overabundance of sex scenes with "squirting," foul language and a lot of kinky, mostly silly, stuff persists throughout all three books and became tiresome fairly soon but since I had so much time to kill and had purchased the whole series, I did manage to eventually finish the ever plodding Book 2. (I have to admit to LOTS of breaks because it really did become tiresome.) Of course there was no more resolution in Book 2 than in Book 1. I thought that since I'd managed to make it through the first two books, I could make it through one more to see how the characters extricated themselves from their impossible situations. By the middle of Book 3, I couldn't suspend disbelief any longer for the totally ridiculous "reality" that these characters supposedly lived in and I got tired of hearing about the ever increasing size of butt plugs used by the main character. I decided to just make up my own ending. It got to be that tiresome. The entire premise for this series is pretty ridiculous and "out there." While I didn't mind forcibly suspending disbelief during the first book, after that it got to be too much. I wanted the characters to wise up and say "Oh wow, that is a really convoluted way of thinking and of handling this situation. Let's just not let ourselves be manipulated anymore." Instead they kept dragging the agony out. When I decided to write a review, I forced myself to pick up Book 3 again and skim to see how the author tied up all of the loose endings. The remainder of Book 3 was more of the same but at least there WAS finally resolution. This book series was totally not worth reading and this has nothing to do with it's total lack of redeeming value but with the lack of entertainment value. I would have preferred it if the author cut out a few sex scenes (that would still have left plenty) and wrapped up the story of all three books in Book 1 and then used Book 2 and Book 3 to delve into their new lives.
